Be so happy that, when other people look at you, they become happy too. - Anonymous
First Things First…
How are YOU doing today?
Did you know that today you’ve been handed a gift? Yes!
You’ve been given the gift of 24 hours. The question is: How will you spend it? This beautiful quote is a favorite as it perfectly sums up this thought:
This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever. In its place is something that you have left behind…Let it be something good. -Anonymous
So…How will YOU spend your today?
Here’s an exercise that’s good for the heart, mind and soul. I challenge you to do this 1 thing today as it will bring you great benefit. And, using it consistently is one of the best ways to start every day on a positive note. Ready?
Make A Grateful List ;-)
Why?
Because a grateful heart comes when we take the time to be mindful and remember all we have in which to be thankful. What better way to remember than to create a list that is displayed in a prominent place and seen every day? Having such a list available creates a constant reminder of all the blessings in which you have to be thankful. And, seeing that list daily will automatically serve to help you stay positive and go about your day with a happier heart. There is so much truth in the saying, “There is always something to be thankful for.” Because, there is always something in which to be thankful.
For starters… are you breathing? Is your heart beating? Begin by being thankful for that. Be thankful for the beautiful world around you, the amazing canvas of color and awe that stretches the earth, made for your enjoyment. Be thankful for pretty sunsets, the changing seasons, the refreshing rain, the drifting clouds, and the nice, cool breezes. Be thankful for the many fascinating creatures that roam the earth...and all the beauty that surrounds you…beauty which most people take for granted, but a gift we’re given every. single. day.
And, don’t stop there… give thanks for those who have helped you and supported you along the way, for friends and family… for those who have blessed you in some way and for the opportunities you’ve had to bless others. Be appreciative for the gift of today and the time given to live it.
Give thanks for past experiences which have shaped you, educated you, and given you a bit more wisdom. Be appreciative for the trials in your life, knowing that trials have a way of shaping your character, allowing you to be more aware and empathetic toward others, and fine-tuning your heart…all of which can make you a better you.
Take inventory and smile as you think about everything you’ve been given...every blessing, large and small that’s touched your life.
Now that I’ve given you a starting point…some things to think about, why not begin to work on your own list today? This simple action will elevate your awareness and allow you to see all the blessings you truly have.
First, find a quiet spot where you can concentrate…some cozy corner where you do your best thinking. Simply allow yourself a moment to stop...to relax...to reflect. Allow yourself to breathe deeply. Slow down your steps...let your mind think. Give yourself permission to not give into the hectic schedule vying for your attention. Carve out some time and clear your calendar of the unnecessary. Be intentional. Make it your goal to create your grateful list.
Then, without restraint, write down everything…big and small…all you can think of in which you have to be grateful. Write down everything that comes to mind. It’s a worthwhile exercise and a wonderful way to keep you focused and thankful.
No matter what’s going on in your life today, having a heart of gratitude allows you to embrace a positive mindset, which is key to driving your actions and directing your day in a positive way.
Do yourself a HUGE favor.
Take time today to make your grateful list. Let it be a daily reminder that you do, in fact, always have something in which to be thankful.
